Manager of Community & Chamber Engagement, Gateway Development

Position Summary:

The Manager of Community & Chamber Engagement plays a key role in building relationships, growing membership, supporting local businesses, and managing programs that enhance the vibrancy and economic vitality of Washington County. This role combines traditional chamber of commerce functions with forward-looking strategies to engage members, host events, support entrepreneurs, and promote workforce development.

Key Responsibilities:

Membership Services & Engagement

  • Serve as the primary liaison for existing and prospective Washington County Chamber members.
  • Coordinate new member onboarding and ensure continued engagement.
  • Develop and implement retention strategies, including member check-ins and benefit updates.
  • Track member data and maintain accurate CRM records.
  • Manage and grow member benefit programs (e.g., discounts, promotions, recognition).

Events & Community Engagement

  • Assist with planning, logistics, and execution of Washington County Chamber and community events.
  • Represent the organization at ribbon cuttings, business anniversaries, and civic functions.
  • Work collaboratively with committees and volunteers to expand impact.

Business Retention & Expansion (BRE)

  • Conduct check-ins with local businesses to identify support needs and growth opportunities.
  • Track trends, report concerns, and refer to economic development staff when appropriate.
  • Help strengthen ties between the business community and Gateway resources.
  • Partner with the Director of Economic Development on follow-ups or strategic interventions.
  • Take lead in revitalizing the Ambassador program throughout the county.

Tourism & Visitor Promotion

  • Coordinate tourism-related promotions, including visitor packets, maps, and event listings.
  • Act as a liaison with local hospitality, retail, and cultural organizations.
  • Maintain the visitor information center (if applicable) and respond to public inquiries.
  • Assist with planning and promotion of festivals, community events, and seasonal campaigns.
  • Help manage tourism-related grants or funding opportunities.

Placemaking & Community Enhancement

  • Collaborate on initiatives that improve public spaces, wayfinding, and community identity.
  • Engage businesses and residents in beautification, public art, and visitor experience efforts.
  • Support outreach and storytelling that celebrates what makes Washington County unique.

Miscellaneous

  • Task prioritization
  • Keep Washington County Chamber Board up to date on relevant activities and initiatives
  • Assist with administrative tasks and office operations as needed
  • Represent the Chamber at community events and public meetings when appropriate
  • Help maintain a positive and professional image of the Chamber in all interactions
  • Support special projects, grant applications, and community development efforts
  • Stay informed on local business trends, legislation, and community issues
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in all matters
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, marketing, public administration, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in community engagement, chamber operations, nonprofit management, or marketing.
  • Event planning and project management experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and representing the organization at events.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Knowledge of chamber of commerce models and small business development.
  • Experience working with membership-based organizations.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry materials or equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Work is typically performed in an office setting, with frequent off-site meetings and events throughout the community.
  • Local travel within Washington County and occasional regional travel are required.
  • The role involves working evenings and weekends to support Chamber events, community functions, and member engagement activities. Flexibility in scheduling is essential.
